believe (definition poem)

believe
/bɪˈliv/

verb

  1. there’s a future out there for you and me—a place where the sun’s glow warms our toes, where green grows from the bare branches of the trees. when the crisp colors of life, light and dark will make us more than we will ever be. there’s something out there, i know. you’ll see.
    • it has always come, the warmth... the stories call it spring.
  2. there’s a home out there for you and me, in this every-expanding galaxy, where we dance among the stars—carefree. one day we can find peace, a place where the air isn’t choking us every time we try to breathe. some place where we don’t slip with every step, fall every time we try to soar. where the smoke isn’t always trying to push into our cracks. where we don’t carry the pieces of our past, heavier than a thousand truths.
    • it has been a long time since we’ve ever known freedom.
  3. there’s a world out there for you and me. for the pages of our story turn, and the world burns with our passion, and— we could destroy it. we could tear the universe down from its towering pedestal and call it ours, bend the gold metal and channel it through our blood—we could take it all, take from the world all it has stolen from us. avenge ourselves. reach the last shard of the glass, we could make ourselves whole again. complete.
  4. there’s an ending out there for you and me. everything ends. the final page, the last spark—why shoulder the boulder of fate when we will crumble anyways? why take the pain when we could be remembered by the world for our fury?
    • but will they remember us if we destroy memory?
    • will it have been worth it?
  5. is there? you and me. do we? know ourselves. who are we? who am i? will you? hold on. take my hand.
  6. you and me. we carry the weight of our broken wings because one day we will fly.
  7. hope—you and me. the unknown is an ever-approaching mystery.
